Happy Birthday! Boquete Turns 100!

Boquete´s Centennial is this year. The town of Boquete was founded in 1911 just eight years after the founding of The Republic of Panama. There will be celebrations throughout the year. The inaugural festivities and parade have already taken place. The Centennial was also specially celebrated during the two annual major Fairgrounds festivals this year: The 39th annual Flower and Coffee Festival in January and The Annual Orchid Festival in March.

Upgraded and Expanded Central Park with Centennial Fountain

The Mayor's office has expanded the Central Park by placing quality paver cobble stones on a cross street and making the new area pedestrian only. The Mayor is also adding a new Centennial Fountain to the Central Park in honor of Boquete's 100th anniversary. The fountain is already under construction.

Panamanian construction company CUSA is well into construction under a $117.6 million contract to expand the road that links David (Panama's third largest city) with Boquete. The current road is two lanes (one each way) and the expanded road will be four (two each way). The project is expected to take three years. Sections will be opened as completed through the three year period.

More Boquete Area Changes

No more switching airports in Panama City to get to Boquete as of 2011?

Currently, flying by air to Boquete/David involves switching airports and airlines in Panama City. Those days appear to be coming to an end. Copa Airlines has announced that sometime in 2011 (our prediction: may spill over to early 2012) you will be able to arrive at the major International Airport in Panama City and then immediately board a 30 minute flight to David eliminated the current need to transfer between airports to reach David and Boquete.

It is expected that this will be offered as a single ticket from major international cities. The impact of this advance is likely to be immense as Boquete and all of Chiriqui Province will become far more accessible to tourists and part-time residents from multiple U.S., Asian, European and Canadian destinations. Copa will likely work with Air Panama under a cooperative agreement for the connecting flight. If Copa and Air Panama are unable to reach agreement, Copa has reported that they will proceed with their own planes and routes or negotiate with Aeroperlas, the other major regional airline in Panama.

Meanwhile, TACA has begun its own direct service with Aeroperlas through Panama City to David. Stay tuned.

New Air Panama jets are flying to David Air Panama's new 70 passenger jet has arrived. This much faster plane which is already in use between Panama City and David adds comfort and increase the number of seats available. First Class seats available. Flying time from David to Panama City (and vice versa) has just been reduced from 50 minutes to 30 minutes.

 David Airport Upgrade phase one complete

There is a four phase program to dramatically upgrade the international airport in David. $27 million has already been allocated, the first phase of runway expansion is already complete, and the new massive terminal is going up quickly. The existing building currently services immigration and customs needs as it receives regular flights from San Jose, Costa Rica. The new facility will be much larger and better facilitate the arrival of larger planes with more passengers. All of this is in preparation for direct US flights to David; though formal and firm announcements or routes will likely come after terminal completion.

Getting to Boquete Travel Improvement Summary

Fresh Asphalt - Avenida Central Downtown. This week, the CUSA construction crews are busy right in downtown. The main street – Avenida Central – running through the center of Boquete is being repaved with 4 inches of fresh asphalt. This is in addition to the numerous downtown road projects completed last year.

It was rumored for years and now it's complete; the gravel road that links Volcancito to Palmira Centro has been paved. Take a look at the Boquete map if you want to be oriented to the road between Volcancito and Palmira (It's in yellow).

Three-Story Boquete Library construction continuing. With the help of the Lion's Club, the Mayor's office and major donors (Motta and Peterson families) among others, Boquete will have a new large downtown library to serve the community on Avenida Central. Completion in a few months.

Bus Station Relocation

The bus station has been relocated which was reported as a possibility in last year's newsletter. The new facility is now located near the new library just before the entrance to the downtown area. This step was taken to reduce passenger bus congestion and bus parking around Boquete's central park.

Jungla Wildlife Center now open

Jungla Wildlife Center has now opened in Palmira Centro, Boquete. Jungla provides an animal rescue center mixed with a petting zoo style-interact with the animals experience.

ExploraYa Ecotours and Adventure Travel opens new Boquete office

ExploraYa has a new Avenida Central office from HablaYa, one of Panama's most successful Spanish language schools.

Valle del Rio condominiums first 18 units complete

The first of three 18 unit condominium buildings adjacent to the Valle del Rio hotel is now complete and ready for occupancy.

SamyLand Mini Golf in Valle Escondido now open

The first 18 hole mini-golf course open to the public in Panama is now open in Boquete. A chance for the public to get a small taste of luxurious Valle Escondido and make some hole-in-ones.

Valle Escondido new condo building

Valle Escondido has begun construction on a new large condo building in the front of the development.

Isla Verde is adding rooms and a restaurant in two new buildings near Valle Escondido.

El Parador cabins and coffee shop in Jaramillo is expanding with new rooms.

Villa San Miguel is a new cabin complex and boutique under construction well underway in Alto Boquete.

Condos Boquete Valley of Flowers is well underway on 2^nd building.

Dona Mirta new commercial building downtown Two story large new commercial building is currently going up 1 block off Avenida Central.

The Todo a Dolar, Dollar Store has moved and expanded into the ground floor of the Fountain residential building.

Sugar and Spice – a new local favorite pastry and sandwich shop is now open on Avenida Central

La Posada Restaurant, Bar, Hotel and Casino has just completed a large addition in the rear of their facility to expand the restaurant and provide banquet space.

Amigos restaurant redux - Amigos restaurant will reopen downtown at the previous location of Recuerdos (the bar with the big tiger painted outside).

New Development underway bordering National Park entrance to Volcan Baru by Bagatracs, a major Panamanian road builder.

Vista Boquete condominiums next to the Cefati tourist center at the entrance to town is about to be revived with condo and villa duplexes planned.

Volcancito Village development just started last year is completing two houses and it's first duplex building adding infrastructure and roads.

Cerro Verde new paved road and other infrastructure now completed.

Boquete Country Club's new swimming pool is nearing completion.

Haven Health Spa has expanded their hotel room offerings in addition to the spa, gym and racquetball facilities.

Big News: Boquete named one of the five "Best Places to Live Abroad" in the September/October 2010 print edition of AARP Magazine:

"The mountain village of Boquete offers something close to heaven for American retirees."

According to their website, AARP Magazine is "the world's largest circulation magazine."

Approximately 25,000,000 people over 50 years of age have recently received this article which is featured on the top right corner of the front cover of the magazine. Only five towns in the entire world are featured.

What does this mean for Boquete? A lot of new people …soon. Scores are already visiting this year and considering Boquete as a place to live or have a second home investment.
