Business Week - July 13 and 20, 2009

On the cover of Business Week's recent "Rethinking Retirement" issue they proclaim: "Panama: It's the New Florida" Since no other international retirement destination was featured and since Boquete is favorably mentioned in the article, this pronouncement seems worthy of note.   While tennis and golf are available in Boquete, we feel the big draws are more about the all-year Spring like weather and temperatures, the warm people, the rich tropical biodiversity and intense natural beauty, low cost of living, range of amenities, proximity to beaches, (but without the heat), and the active and large expat community.  New arrivals tell us that, with many pleasant surprises, life seems more colorful and alive in Boquete. Here's an excerpt from the BusinessWeek article:

"Retirement: Why Panama Is the New Florida.
Panama's quality health care, low costs, and proximity to the states are attracting American professionals as a retirement haven.

Prospective retirees: Panama wants you. The pitch? A plane ride just two and half hours from Miami enables the newly poor to swap a wretched retirement in the U.S. for one befitting a royal in the balmy Central American nation. Cash out! Emigrate! Feel rich! Panama-the new Florida.

Spin aside, Panama is increasingly popular among retirement-age types looking to hedge against-or skip out on-the recession. The Migration Policy Institute, a Washington-based think tank that studies the movement of people around the world, says the chief factors prodding professional-class Americans to flock to Panama include its First World health care available at Third World prices and the country's pensioner program, which offers some of the deepest retiree discounts in Latin America. Seniors get up to half off on nearly everything, including movies, motels, doctors' visits, plane tickets, professional services, and electric bills. Expats also pay no tax in Panama on foreign income. Nor are they required to pay property tax for the first 20 years....

But Panama isn't only about the beach. The Boquete region in the mountains-Panama's answer to Boulder, Colo.-boasts loads of U.S.-style gated retirement compounds. The big draws of the area are tennis and golf. For those who are more interested in urban amenities, Panama City, which is by the sea, is sprouting yoga studios, bohemian boutiques, health-food stores, and artsy coffee houses...."

Boquete Area Changes

New Boquete Event Center and Theatre. The Boquete Community Players have undertaken a mayor renovation project to bring the community the new Boquete Event Center and Theatre. The community theatre group that regularly produces many high quality productions has leased the former location of Snoopy's restaurant by the new bridge and fairgrounds.  The site is undergoing renovations from many volunteers, and events are already occuring there including this past weekend´s Boquete Arts Festival featuring 30 artists.

Central park work in process. Boquete Central Park Upgrade.The mayor has begun a major upgrade of Parque Jose Domingo Medica which is the main park in the center of town. The upgrade includes the replacement of all of the park grounds with quality paving stones.

La Posada Boquena Hotel and Restaurant is preparing to open downtown. Formerly the La Huaca Hotel near the Panamonte, the new and historic La Posada Boquena has been refurbished and expanded. The site is preparing to reopen as a café, restaurant, quality pizzeria, game room and hotel.

New Hotel under construction downtown. A new 3 story hotel in the center of downtown on the main street is back under construction.  The hotel is directly across from the large Bruna Supermarket and Bistro Boquete.

Valle del Rio condominiums construction. First of three 18 unit condominium buildings adjacent to the Valle del Rio hotel is moving ahead rapidly. With interior finishes such as flooring and cabinetry underway.

Hotel Ladera - Hotel Ladera and restaurant is in the process of being rebuilt

Boquete Country Club new villas and condos complete. In addition to the four story condominium buildings in Boquete Country Club, the first phase of the new Blue Sky condominiums are complete and additional villas are under construction.  The gymnasium and restaurant at the club are now open and available to residents.

The Springs de Boquete residential development new homes. Additional new homes now complete in The Springs de Boquete "Espectacular" community in Palo Alto.

Stephanie Joyeria and Accessories Jewelry Store new location. Stephanie has moved into the center of downtown on the main street across from La Reyna department store in the Don Andres building.  A great selection of Reprosa jewelry, handbags, watches and accessories.

Monte Verde Condominiums nearly complete. Six luxury apartments in Alto Lino getting the finishing touches.

Panamonte Hotel and Restaurant Expansion. Phase One of Panamonte Hotel and Restaurant expansion and renovation is complete with new luxury and honeymoon suite rooms and a new large parking area. 

Boquete Valley of Flowers condos now under construction. First group of 32 affordable condominium units in Volcancito near tourist center have construction underway. 

Fountain downtown condos completed. The three story commercial and apartment building, The Fountain, downtown is now complete. (The Fountain features Casa Solution/Home Interiors Johnson Acero modern style kitchen cabinets and Silestone countertops). This edition's featured condominium project.

Papa Ricco's Reopened. Papa Ricco's Italian Food and New York style Pizza is now open on the main road across from Brisas Boqueteñas development. Yum.

Major New Large Gym and Spa Close-to-Downtown Construction continuing by Haven Spa. The facility will include a racquet ball court, cricket court, locker rooms, social areas and high quality gym. Expected opening in just a few months.

New Restaurant Las Orquideas Has just open next to Machu Picchu Downtown.

Road Improvements Recently road improvements have included the road to The Springs de Boquete in Palo Alto, the road along the Feria Downtown, the access road to Valle Escondido and Valle del Rio, and Road to La Estrella in Jaramillo.

New Location: Tuesday Morning Information and Networking Meeting

Every Tuesday morning between 10:30am and 12:00pm there is a Tuesday Morning Information and Networking meeting in English with a different speaker each week now at the New Boquete Event Center and Theatre (Old Snoopys). Attendance is typically 40-120 people.

Oct 6, 2009 - The Boquete Mayor, Sr. Manolo Ruiz, will be our speaker.

Oct 13, 2009 - Stop Crime in Boquete - Mark Heyer will discuss the new Alto al Crimen Foundation, its mission and the methods by which, supported by the community, it can reduce crime in Boquete and the surrounding area. Bill Streit will outline practical methods for protecting your own home and property. The presentation will be highly interactive and questions are welcomed.

The Alto al Crimen Foundation has recently been created by a group of concerned Boquete area residents to address current and future crime problems in our community. Based on the experience of Caesar Sherrard in Belize, Alto Crimen is loosely modeled on the successful Crime Stoppers International organization.

Oct 20, 2009 - Attorney Rainelda Mata-Kelly will talk about the new immigration laws and the new tax laws but will also address other questions regarding Panamanian law including what is necessary to apply for Panamanian citizenship.

Oct 27, 2009 - Dr. Jennifer Daniels will speak on Natural Weight loss.

Dr. Daniels is a Medical Doctor from the United States who now has a Naturista office in David. 3

Helping people lose weight naturally and quickly is one of her specialties. She will discuss how natural weight loss works, why natural weight loss is quicker and why it helps you keep the weight off. Her biggest Chiriqui loser has lost 72 pounds.

Nov 24, 2009 - Do you or a loved one suffer from hearing loss? Dr. Couture-Souvenir, Doctor of Audiology, Hear 4 U Hospital Chriiqui will be presenting Hearing Loss 101: Defining hearing loss, it's symtoms, it's causes, who's at risk, the complications it causes, and what can be done to help. She will be accompanied by the Director of their Hospital Chiriqui clinic, Enrique Chevere.
