Panama and Japan are close to establishing a direct flight between Tokyo and Panama City through All Nippon Airways (ANA). The announcement came during President José Raúl Mulino’s official visit to Japan, where Foreign Minister Javier Martínez Acha confirmed that negotiations are in their final stages.
The planned route would make Panama a more direct entry point into Central and South America for Japanese travelers and businesses, reducing travel time and minimizing customs procedures. Officials highlighted Panama’s position as a hub of the Americas, emphasizing its role in connecting Asia with Latin America.
Talks also included the extension of the visa waiver for Panamanians traveling to Japan. Since April 2024, Japanese citizens have enjoyed visa-free entry into Panama for short stays, and the Panamanian government now seeks the same benefit for its citizens visiting Japan.
Beyond air travel and visas, both countries discussed wider areas of cooperation. Topics included Canal security, trade opportunities, investment prospects, and infrastructure projects. Japan remains one of the largest users of the Panama Canal, making stronger ties important for both nations.
If finalized, the direct flight would be a milestone in bilateral relations, boosting tourism, cultural exchange, and commercial links between Asia and Latin America.
