Panama has officially begun building its first public Hospital de Mascotas, a landmark project expected to open by mid 2027. President José Raúl Mulino and First Lady Maricel de Mulino led the groundbreaking ceremony, marking a significant step toward accessible veterinary care for thousands of families in the capital.
The hospital will be located in the Costa Sur area of Juan Díaz, just minutes from Costa del Este, one of Panama City’s most established and sought-after residential and commercial neighborhoods.

A Major Upgrade in Public Veterinary Services
With eight consultation rooms, 18 veterinarians on staff each day, and capacity for 240 daily consultations, the facility is poised to transform how pet care is delivered in Panama City. The hospital is designed to provide everything from general consultations and emergency care to surgeries, hospitalization, rehabilitation, and ongoing sterilization programs.
President Mulino confirmed that the project includes three years of guaranteed maintenance and full modern equipment for its operations. It is expected to benefit more than 181,000 pets living in the districts of Panama and San Miguelito.
A Training Center for Future Veterinarians
Beyond clinical services, the new hospital will serve as a supervised practice site for veterinary students. Authorities emphasized that integrating education and community support helps strengthen Panama’s long-term capacity in animal health.
The ceremony was attended by Minister of Health Fernando Boyd, Secretary of Goals José Ramón Icaza, Panama City Mayor Mayer Mizrachi, and Governor Mayín Correa, highlighting the project’s national importance.
Designed With Social Impact in Mind
Officials reiterated that the hospital will operate with an inclusive and community-focused approach, giving priority to low-income families while delivering high-quality veterinary care. This initiative is part of a larger national effort to expand essential services and improve urban well-being.
In parallel, the Minister of Agriculture, Roberto Linares, announced progress on a second public pet hospital in David, Chiriquí, another key urban center.

How This Benefits Surrounding Residential Areas Like Costa del Este
While the project itself is not a real estate initiative, this type of public investment contributes to broader neighborhood desirability. Costa del Este, an already thriving community known for its modern infrastructure, international schools, corporate presence, and walkability, stands to benefit subtly from improved public services nearby.
For expats, families, and investors, amenities such as accessible pet care add to the overall appeal of the area, reinforcing its reputation as one of Panama City’s most convenient and well-rounded places to live. Although the impact on prices is not expected to be dramatic, enhanced services often support long-term confidence in the neighborhood.
