Regional Rail Project Gains Momentum
Panama and Costa Rica are moving forward with a major cross-border infrastructure project: a proposed railway stretching from Panama City to the Costa Rican border, with future extension into Costa Rica. Officials met in Paso Canoas to review the Panama-David-Frontera Railway Master Plan, which outlines a 450 km route intended to support both cargo and passenger transport, while boosting tourism and logistics in the region.
Henry Faarup, Secretary General of Panama’s Railway Authority, and Álvaro Bermúdez of INCOFER led the meeting, joined by representatives from AECOM, the Panama Maritime Authority, and local governments. Three possible interconnection points were identified—Paso Canoas Abajo, La Cuesta, and Laurel—with site visits conducted for feasibility analysis.
Impact on Real Estate in David and Paso Canoas
This planned railway is poised to elevate real estate prospects in both David and Paso Canoas. David, already a growing hub in Chiriquí, would benefit from faster access to Panama City, while Paso Canoas could emerge as a vital logistics center at the border. Investors and expats may find long-term value in exploring opportunities in these areas ahead of potential development-driven price increases.
