Panama Focuses Tourism Strategy on Culture and Nature for 2026

Tourism moves beyond post-pandemic recovery

Panama is reshaping its tourism strategy with a clear emphasis on cultural heritage and natural attractions, according to Gloria De Leon, administrator of the Autoridad de Turismo de Panama (ATP). Officials say the country has moved past the recovery phase following the pandemic and is now focused on strengthening and modernizing the sector.

Visitor numbers exceed expectations in 2025

Tourism results in 2025 were described as positive. The Panama Stopover program, operated with Copa Airlines, surpassed its original goal of 185,000 visitors and closed the year with more than 200,000 travelers. Overall international arrivals increased by 5 percent compared to previous years.

Growth in conferences and international events

Panama also continued to position itself as a regional hub for meetings and conventions. More than 100 international events were held in 2025, with over 60 already confirmed for 2026. Authorities highlighted the broad economic impact of this segment across transportation, hospitality, and services.

Key destinations remain central to the strategy

For 2026, tourism authorities are promoting an integrated offer that combines culture, biodiversity, gastronomy, and nature. Destinations such as Bocas del Toro and the Panamanian Caribbean remain priorities. In Panama City, the historic Casco Antiguo continues to attract international attention, while the Azuero Peninsula stands out for its strong cultural traditions.

Infrastructure projects and local coordination

Between eight and ten tourism infrastructure projects are currently underway, several supported by the Inter-American Development Bank. Recent works include visitor centers in Boquete and Pedasi, a tourism information center in Isla Colon, Bocas del Toro, and upgrades to public spaces and sanitation systems in Taboga.

Support for local tourism entrepreneurs

Through the Empreturismo program, the ATP is supporting new tourism ventures in destinations such as Santa Catalina, Taboga, Boquete, and Boca Chica. The initiative provides seed capital and technical support, with projects monitored by Ciudad del Saber to ensure long-term sustainability.

Digital tools and new traveler protections

Tourism authorities are expanding digital tools to better track visitor behavior, length of stay, and spending, working with more than 325 hotels nationwide. Looking ahead, Panama plans to activate a tourist insurance program in 2026, aimed at strengthening destination competitiveness and traveler confidence.
