Panama Targets Conference Tourism in 2026 – What 37 Confirmed Events Could Mean for Hotels, Restaurants, and Local Services

Panama Secures 37 International Conferences for 2026, Reinforcing Its Role as a Regional Meetings Hub

Panama has confirmed 37 international conferences and congresses for 2026, with an additional 44 events currently under negotiation, signaling a strong year ahead for the country’s meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions sector. Together, these events are expected to attract more than 63,000 international attendees, generate approximately 262,000 hotel room nights, and inject an estimated USD $119 million directly into the national economy.

Conference tourism has become a strategic pillar for Panama because of its ability to deliver high-value visitors throughout the year, particularly during periods that traditionally experience softer leisure demand. Unlike seasonal tourism, international congresses are planned years in advance and provide predictable occupancy and spending across hotels, restaurants, transportation services, and event suppliers.

A high-impact visitor profile

Business and conference travelers typically spend more per day than leisure tourists. Their expenses go beyond accommodation and include dining, local transportation, venue services, technical production, interpretation, catering, and post-event activities. This concentration of spending over a short period creates measurable economic spillover across the hospitality ecosystem.

In recent years, Panama has demonstrated its capacity to host complex, large-scale events. During the previous year, the country welcomed close to 100 international congresses, resulting in over 59,000 foreign participants, more than 310,000 hotel room nights, and an estimated USD $141 million in tourism revenue. These results laid the groundwork for the expanded 2026 calendar.

Infrastructure and connectivity as competitive advantages

Panama’s ability to attract global conferences is closely tied to its logistics and infrastructure. The country’s air connectivity, centralized urban layout, and modern venues allow organizers to host events with minimal friction for international participants.

A key asset is the Panama Convention Center, which has become the anchor venue for large congresses and exhibitions. The center’s capacity, combined with nearby hotel inventory, has positioned Panama as a competitive alternative to larger regional destinations.

To remain attractive in an increasingly competitive global meetings market, Panama also applies targeted incentives, including venue support tied to minimum room-night commitments. These programs reduce upfront costs for organizers while ensuring that hotels and local businesses capture sustained demand.

Hospitality sector benefits extend beyond hotels

While hotels are the most visible beneficiaries, conference tourism drives activity across multiple sectors. Restaurants see increased weekday traffic, transportation companies handle structured group movements, and tour operators benefit from pre- and post-event extensions. Many attendees extend their stay to explore cultural districts, dining areas, and nearby attractions, amplifying the overall economic impact.

Conference schedules also help smooth out demand volatility. Instead of sharp peaks tied only to holidays or vacation seasons, hospitality operators gain access to a steadier flow of bookings anchored by confirmed event calendars.

Geographic concentration and expansion challenges

At present, the bulk of conference activity remains concentrated in Panama City. Industry stakeholders have emphasized the importance of developing structured extension programs that encourage visitors to explore destinations outside the capital before or after their events. These extensions can help distribute tourism income more evenly while enhancing the overall visitor experience.

A forward-looking outlook

With dozens of confirmed events and a strong pipeline still under negotiation, 2026 is shaping up to be a defining year for Panama’s conference tourism strategy. For the hospitality industry, this translates into higher occupancy stability, stronger mid-week performance, and sustained demand across service categories that support the broader economy.
