Panama has made a notable leap on the global stage in terms of travel freedom. In the latest edition of the Henley Passport Index, Panama has risen to 28th place, granting its citizens visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 148 destinations worldwide.
This marks a return to the same ranking it held in 2014 and reflects an overall strengthening of the country’s global mobility.
The Henley Passport Index, based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), ranks passports by the number of destinations their holders can access without needing a visa in advance.
Global Overview: Asia Leads, U.S. and U.K. Decline
Once again, Asian countries dominate the top of the list. Singapore holds the number one spot with access to 193 destinations out of a possible 227. Japan and South Korea follow closely behind in second place, each offering access to 190 countries.
European nations round out much of the rest of the top ten, with Germany, France, Italy, and Spain tied for third place at 189 destinations.
Notably, the United States and the United Kingdom continue their slow decline in the rankings.
The U.S. is now tied for 10th place with access to 182 countries – a far cry from its top position in 2014. Similarly, the U.K. has dropped to sixth place.
The standout climber over the last decade has been the United Arab Emirates, which jumped 34 spots to reach 8th place in 2025.
Latin America’s Position
Within Latin America, Chile leads with visa-free access to 176 destinations, landing it in 14th place globally.
Brazil and Argentina both rank 16th with access to 170 destinations. Panama, with its improved position, now surpasses many regional neighbors and shows a clear upward trend in international recognition.
Venezuela, by contrast, has experienced one of the steepest declines. It dropped 15 positions over the last ten years, now sitting in 45th place.
The Cost of a Panamanian Passport
The Panamanian passport remains relatively accessible in terms of cost. For citizens and naturalized residents, the fee is $100. Seniors receive a 50% discount, paying $50. Diplomatic and consular passports are issued free of charge.
A Broader Message
While the ranking itself is primarily technical, it holds wider implications for the country’s image, trade potential, and the ease with which Panamanians can connect with the world.
Whether for tourism, business, or education, greater mobility is a tangible benefit for citizens and a sign of a country with growing international reach.
