Panama City, September 16, 2025 – The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) has disbursed $75 million to the Republic of Panama to reinforce national efforts in forest conservation and restoration.
The funds were provided through a Development Policy Operation (DPO) designed to promote sustainable management of Panama’s forests. The program includes eight strategic actions, such as new regulations for certified timber harvesting and stricter controls over the transportation and commercialization of wood. The goal is to build a more transparent and orderly value chain that supports environmental protection.
Another key component of the initiative is the reactivation of the National Forest Management Council (CONAGEFOR). This body plays a central role in coordinating technical policies that encourage sustainable forestry, generate benefits for rural communities, and contribute to Panama’s broader social and economic development.
The BCIE emphasized that this support underscores its commitment to building a greener and more resilient future in the region. By bolstering Panama’s forest sector, the program seeks to secure the country’s natural resources, which are vital for water regulation, carbon capture, disaster risk reduction, and biodiversity conservation.
This latest financing aligns with Panama’s national climate and environmental goals, reflecting a wider regional push for sustainability and responsible resource use.
