Tourism Growth in Panama Reaches 8.4% in First Half of 2025

Panama’s tourism sector is showing strong momentum. According to Promtur Panamá, international arrivals from January to June 2025 grew by 8.4%, placing the country at the forefront of regional tourism growth.

Positive Signs Despite Global Challenges

At a recent tourism industry gathering, Demetrio Maduro, President of Promtur’s Board of Directors, highlighted that Panama continues to strengthen its strategies to attract international visitors and expand the convention market.

Hotel occupancy rose by about 4% compared to the same period in 2024, though below the 6% to 8% increase initially projected. Maduro acknowledged that international demand has not yet reached its full potential but emphasized that recovery is underway. He also noted that well-managed tourism could eventually surpass the revenue generated by the Panama Canal, benefiting not just hoteliers but the entire tourism value chain.

Key Strategies for Expansion

Gloria María De León Zubieta, Administrator of the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP), outlined measures being implemented for the remainder of 2025 and into 2026:

  • Airline and digital partnerships – Collaborations with carriers, travel agencies, and global platforms such as Expedia and Hotel Best.

  • Incentives for conventions – Free access to convention centers for events generating more than 2,000 room nights.

  • Target markets – Focus on countries with strong air connectivity, including the United States, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Brazil.

  • Tourism diversification – Promotion of Panama as a hub for conventions and sports tourism to stimulate local economies and create jobs.

The ATP confirmed a secured annual budget of $20 million for Promtur, ensuring continuity in international positioning efforts despite broader fiscal adjustments.

Impact on Panama’s Real Estate Landscape

Tourism growth naturally supports investment opportunities in areas that attract both leisure travelers and event organizers. Communities like Boquete in Chiriquí and Pedasí on the Azuero Peninsula stand to benefit from increased international exposure. More visitors often translate into higher demand for short-term rentals, boutique hotels, and vacation homes.

With Panama aiming to position itself as both a leisure and convention hub, properties near cultural centers, eco-tourism hotspots, and accessible airports are likely to see steady appreciation and increased rental yields.

Conclusion

Panama’s tourism industry is on an upward path, showing resilience and strategic planning. As noted by Maduro, opportunities already secured extend well beyond hospitality, creating ripple effects across the national economy. For investors, residents, and expats considering Panama, the sector’s growth signals a positive environment for long-term confidence.
